Origin Croatia

Whole chamomile flowers are among the most classic and widely used "drugs". The name derives from the Greek chamaimelon, meaning earth apple, probably due to the button-like shape of the flowers or, according to Pliny, from a certain scent they release. Chamomile grows almost everywhere in warm and temperate climates but is not very profitable, as only the yellow flower with a crown of white petals is harvested. It is a plant that has been extensively studied, with a fairly complex composition. In its essence, we find a bit of everything: vitamin C, alcohols, salicylic acid, various glucosides, resinous substances, etc.

Chamomile Flowers: Properties and Benefits

As many of us know, chamomile flowers have numerous beneficial effects on the stomach, and therefore chamomile infusion is used for its digestive benefits, promoting intestinal peristalsis and also having laxative effects. Many wonder if chamomile infusion helps sleep better. As mentioned, its sedative power is mainly related to the intestinal area and not the nervous system, which, however, inevitably benefits from the rebalancing of its neighbors. Therefore, we can say that chamomile is not the best nerve sedative, but rather an excellent digestive. There are numerous plants and natural methods to relax nerves and aid sleep, like lime or our relaxing herbal tea, also found in Serenvin, a mother tincture of relaxing plants to promote sleep and relaxation.

How long before bedtime should I drink it?

Defining a specific time frame to drink chamomile before bedtime is not possible. This is because we know that chamomile flower infusion does not have the relaxing effects on the nervous system that we commonly imagine, but rather acts on the intestine and digestive system. It is therefore recommended not to consume chamomile flowers just before going to bed to avoid intestinal effects that may disturb sleep. The infusion times are important; if exceeded, the result could be a drink even more stimulating than coffee!

How long does it take to take effect?

Again, there is no well-defined timeframe after which the intake of chamomile flowers begins to have the desired effects. Much depends on our body's ability and speed of assimilation. However, for it to produce the desired effects in the best way, it is necessary to drink it while still hot, within a few minutes of infusion.

How to Use Chamomile Flowers?

There are multiple uses for chamomile flowers, not limited to the culinary field with the preparation of various recipes with chamomile flowers. It is also used in the cosmetic field to have brighter, cleaner, and more hydrated skin.

  • To keep the skin clean and prevent the appearance of blackheads, they are used in the preparation of a DIY scrub;
  • To promote skin hydration and keep it luminous, we recommend chamomile flowers for preparing a face mask. Once the chamomile has cooled, mix it with 5 tablespoons in a bowl, add honey and oat flour. Mix well and apply the mask to dry face and leave it on for about 20 minutes;
  • Prepare a DIY lotion for blonde hair. The effects of organic chamomile flowers help restore the pH balance of the scalp, counteract any itching, and give blonde highlights to your hair.

How to Make Chamomile Flower Infusion

Chamomile flowers are known for their numerous properties, and what best enhances their flavor, scents, and organoleptic characteristics is the herbal tea made with whole chamomile flowers infused. The homemade chamomile preparation is traditionally made with whole flowers that enhance its olfactory and gustatory qualities.

To make chamomile herbal tea, all you need is:

  • 250 ml of water heated on the stove until it reaches 100°C
  • 2 gr of whole chamomile flowers
  • A steel filter for infusion or a teapot with an integrated filter
  • Any ingredient chosen by you to enrich the flavor of chamomile herbal tea such as other spices or honey

Once the water has boiled, add 2 gr of chamomile flowers for sale on Terza Luna. Let it infuse for a good 8 minutes to release its flavor, the chamomile flowers inside special filters or teapots. Now you can enjoy your chamomile herbal tea.

How Long to Infuse Chamomile?

The infusion times in the preparation of herbal tea with dried chamomile flowers are very important. Our advice is to infuse the flowers for no more than a few minutes, about 5. However, if you exceed the times, you risk having a more excited effect than drinking a good coffee. In that case, it would be better not to drink it immediately before going to bed.

Can Chamomile Be Smoked?

Many wonder if it is possible to smoke chamomile flowers and if they have relaxing effects on the nervous system. To date, there are no studies affirming its absolute effectiveness, although many use dried chamomile flowers along with other natural herbs as a valid tobacco substitute to quit smoking. Not containing nicotine, it has proven to be a valid cigarette substitute, helping smokers reduce the amount of tobacco consumed.

How Many Chamomiles Can I Drink a Day?

A daily consumption of chamomile flowers, even through infusion, should not lead to any negative effects unless consumed excessively. To enjoy the effects of dried flowers with many properties, 1 or 2 cups a day are sufficient.

Contraindications and Side Effects of Chamomile

Drinking an excessive amount of chamomile infusion should not lead to serious contraindications or side effects, although high dosages or prolonged use over time are always discouraged. However, in particularly sensitive individuals, it could cause insomnia, agitation, and nausea. We are often asked if drinking chamomile flower infusion during pregnancy is harmful. The answer is no. On the contrary, a balanced consumption of the beverage would help counteract abdominal pain from poor digestion, promote sleep, and combat anxiety.

Plant Description

The chamomile plant, also known as Matricaria chamomilla, can be easily found in the wild, especially on uncultivated and mountain paths. Be careful not to confuse it with false chamomile, Chamomilla inodora, which also differs in scent.

When to Sow Chamomile

Sowing chamomile takes place in spring, directly on the ground, making the process very simple. The main phase of sowing consists of preparing the soil. If you are not an expert, you can simply scatter the seeds, cover them with a rake, and water them.

How and When to Harvest It

The most used part of the plant are the flower heads, although we know that the whole plant is fragrant. The flower heads are harvested between May and September, when they are in full bloom in order to have the highest concentration of active ingredients and an intense fragrance.

How to Dry Chamomile Flowers

To dry chamomile flowers, you need a cool and well-ventilated place to prevent mold formation caused by humidity. It is preferable to choose a shaded place to avoid drying in the sun, which would cause the loss of the plant's aromas. To prevent contamination from dust, simply cover the flowers with a dry cloth. It takes only 2 or 3 days to complete the drying process. Once the process is complete, separate the flowers and store them in well-sealed glass jars.
