Tè Assam

Assam tea is an Indian black tea, considered by many to be the best quality of tea. It is named after the place where it is grown, the Assam region in north-west India, where there are vast plantations of this type of tea growing in the Brahmaputra river valley. Assam is the region in India, along with Darjeeling, where the famous Darjeeling tea is grown, which produces more tea (over 1/10 of the world's production!), and the Assam Company, dating back to 1839, is the world's first tea production company.

Assam tea is produced exclusively with the Camellia sinensis assamica, a variety different from the Chinese one, very resistant to temperature changes and weather variations, a resistance reflected in the robust and intense flavor of Assam tea, with woody malt tones. It is grown at sea level altitudes and has dark and regular leaves. Despite the strong taste of Assam tea, it has floral notes and aromas, reminiscent of those of a mountain Ceylon tea.

Assam tea is famous not only for being a precious black tea, but also for often being included in tea blends, such as Earl Gray or Breakfast Tea, like Irish Breakfast Tea, precisely because thanks to its strong and intense flavor and high caffeine content, it is considered an excellent tea for breakfast.

Black Tea Assam Tonganagaon

This variety of Assam black tea is called Tonganagaon, named after the estate in India where it is grown. This tea garden is located in the Tinsukia district, in the Indian Assam region near the northeast border with China. Assam Tonganagaon tea is a very strong black tea, with a malty flavor, rich in buds that give it a different and more refined taste than a classic black tea. It is a pure black tea, very special, a second flush of the highest quality.

How to Prepare Indian Assam Tea

Assam is a very precious black tea and easy to prepare in infusion. It does not require special tools or steps. To prepare it, use:

  • 250 ml of water at 95°C
  • 2-3 grams of Assam Tea
  • Infusion Time: 3-4 minutes

If the Assam tea is very rich in buds, you can lower the water temperature, while if you want a fuller flavor, you can extend the infusion time by a few minutes.

Assam tea is excellent accompanied by milk, thanks to its full-bodied, malty, and deep flavor, perfect for breakfast.

What Does Assam Pair With? The Breakfast Tea par Excellence

Assam tea is a very popular tea used in blends like Earl Grey and breakfast teas, but it is also great enjoyed in its purity. It can therefore accompany particularly rich breakfasts, such as English Breakfast with eggs and bacon, and it is a tea that definitely lends itself to savory accompaniments of hearty dishes, meats, salmon, hams. Also great with sweets, cookies and tarts but also richer pastry creations, with chocolate and creams, and spicy sweets. Indian Assam teas are an excellent source of energy to start the day well, and are a perfect base of black tea to prepare Masala Chai, the spiced tea.

Properties

Like all teas obtained from the Camellia Sinensis plant, even Assam tea from India is rich in properties thanks to the presence of polyphenols, very important natural organic molecules for health, antioxidants, minerals, amino acids, and chlorophyll. The Assam Tonganagaon black tea from Darjeeling has draining properties, like all black teas, thanks to the content of theine. Black teas in general have fewer properties compared to green teas: this is due to their processing. The leaf of black teas, in fact, undergoes a process of oxidation which causes it to lose some of the antioxidant properties that we find more in green teas, especially in pure and possibly fresh ones, like our premium teas.

If you want to drink tea for its properties, we recommend choosing a green tea that has been harvested within the year, the latest available harvest. Spring harvests (up to May) are the richest in properties. Look for them among our online teas.
