Mace Flower

Packaging of 50g, 100g, 250g

The Mace, also known as Myristica fragrans, is a spice with great properties obtained from the aril of the nutmeg, the part that surrounds it. Thanks to this close contact, it takes on the captivating aroma of nutmeg, although it is more delicate. The mace flower from Terza Luna is available in whole aril format and comes from organic farming originating in Grenada.

Properties and Benefits of Mace Flower

The organic mace flower, besides being used to flavor various dishes thanks to its delicate taste, is consumed for its numerous nutritional properties and the benefits it brings to our body. The properties of mace, similar to those of nutmeg, make it:

  • An excellent digestive thanks to its beneficial properties for the intestine derived from a good presence of fiber;
  • An anti-inflammatory and analgesic particularly indicated in case of arthritis and rheumatism. In Chinese medicine, it was used for abdominal pain, while today it also has positive effects against toothaches and headaches;
  • A remedy for coughs and colds due to its great mucous fluidifying power, allowing a greater expulsion of deposited phlegm favoring healing;
  • A natural antioxidant thanks to its numerous active principles that help counteract cellular aging;
  • A natural aphrodisiac capable of awakening sexual desire;
  • An excellent ally of the nervous system, used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic Indian medicine against stress-induced depression and anxiety. Excellent as an aid to rebalance mood and as a remedy against mental fatigue.

Uses of Mace

The uses of mace in cooking are multiple thanks to its delicate flavor, very similar to nutmeg. It is used both in powder form and in flower form, available on Terza Luna.

Taste of Mace Flower

The mace flower has a flavor that closely resembles that of nutmeg, although it is sweeter and more delicate. The smell also closely resembles the fruit it surrounds. For this reason, it is widely used in cooking, paired with both sweet and savory dishes. Experts use its delicate and sweet flavor for the preparation of cocktails and refined drinks.

Using Mace in Cooking

In the kitchen, organic Mace is predominantly used in small pieces, in this case, the flower format available on Terza Luna is ideal. In other cases, it is used in powder form or, if found fresh, it is also grated over dishes.
Having a flavor very similar to nutmeg, it could be used as a substitute in all dishes, both sweet like creams, cookies, and dessert doughs, and in savory dishes like curry, risottos, savory pies, and to flavor cheeses or soups and stews.
One of the advantages of using the mace flower lies in its color, which gives a particular chromatic effect and is therefore also used as a decoration in dishes. Be careful not to overdo it with the quantities as it could compromise the original taste of the dishes.

Mace Infusion

The flower is also used for the preparation of the famous mace infusion with many beneficial properties. Making an excellent homemade organic mace tea requires a few simple steps.
First, heat some water in a saucepan until it boils. Once the necessary temperature is reached, add a teaspoon of spices in small pieces and let it infuse for about ten minutes. Then filter the drink and enjoy the delicious mace infusion.

Contraindications

If taken in the right quantities, mace flower does not have any particular contraindications or side effects. It is not recommended to exceed the quantity of 2 grams per day. A high consumption of mace could cause: loss of concentration, increased sweating, palpitations, pain, and, in severe cases, hallucinations and delirium.
Do not take mace during pregnancy. Strongly discouraged for children and those undergoing therapy with psychotropic drugs.

Mace Plant

The Indonesian spice comes from the outer part of the fruit of the plant Myristica fragrans, better known as the nutmeg tree. It is a plant belonging to the Indonesian tradition which is widely used for its numerous properties. Mace consists of the outer layer of the fruit, the nutmeg, which is red in color, and once dried, it turns more orange and is used as a spice for its particular and delicate flavor, similar to the fruit it covers.
