Licorice Root: Characteristics and Parts Used

The licorice root is the most used part of the licorice plant, Glycyrrhiza glabra. The term Glycyrrhiza means 'sweet root', and the glabra species is the most common variety of this plant, which grows wild in many areas of the Mediterranean Europe and Asia. The licorice plant belongs to the legume family, and its roots, the part that is used for consumption, extend up to two meters. When the plant is 2-3 years old, the roots are harvested, dried, and peeled from their brown woody bark, leaving the fibrous yellow inner part that can be chewed to taste its flavor, or boiled for a long time to extract the famous dark-colored extract used for making sweets, the famous black licorice candies.

Taste

Licorice root has a very sweet and balsamic taste, reminiscent of anise and fennel. If chewed for a long time, the root will then take on a more bitter taste. Thanks to its flavor, licorice root is used to quit smoking and to soothe throat irritations caused by smoking.

How to Use Peeled Licorice Root Pieces

Licorice is widely used in cooking, but peeled licorice pieces can also be consumed as they are, to chew and suck on like candies, to taste their unique flavor.

Peeled licorice can also be infused to obtain a fragrant decoction. The licorice root in tea cut pieces is ideal for this use: just put about 15 grams of licorice root in a pot of water and bring to a boil to obtain a very sweet decoction to prepare various herbal teas.

If powdered, licorice root also finds various uses in cooking, as it can be added to different recipes to give a particularly sweet and balsamic taste and aroma.

Licorice Root: Properties and Benefits

Licorice root was widely used in traditional medicine in Greece, ancient Egypt, and China to treat stomach disorders, vascular problems, and spleen disorders. It also has an important action on the intestinal and gastrointestinal tract and is useful against bloating. It is also beneficial for those with low blood pressure, as glycyrrhizin acts on aldosterone levels, a hormone that regulates blood pressure. Glycyrrhizin is the active ingredient in licorice, and the most important substance contained in the root: it makes licorice a strong antispasmodic and antioxidant, making it beneficial for bronchial and respiratory tract disorders as it is also an excellent anti-inflammatory. It has also been shown that licorice helps to combat stress and promote relaxation, therefore a great licorice herbal tea thanks to the sugars present in the root helps to calm and combat insomnia, as well as regulate blood sugar. Licorice root, as well as in stick form, is very effective in facilitating digestion and creating a natural protection for the walls of the intestinal mucosa. A licorice herbal tea is highly recommended for the laxative properties of this plant and very suitable for smokers, who are often affected by colds and respiratory problems. We certainly cannot forget the property that made the licorice plant famous, allowing many nomadic populations to hydrate during their travels, using Glycyrrhiza glabra as a substitute for water. Excellent for refreshing and suitable for those with low blood pressure, licorice has extremely positive effects on the body, even in the case of seasickness.

Contraindications

Despite its numerous properties, licorice root, if consumed in excessive quantities, can have side effects. It is used by those who suffer from low blood pressure, but it can be harmful to those with hypertension and high blood pressure. It can also cause edema and promote water retention.
