The "Red Tea of South Africa"

Rooibos, also known as African red tea or redbush tea, is an infusion made from the leaves of Aspalathus linearis, a bushy plant cultivated on the western coast of South Africa. Let's discover its properties, benefits, how to prepare it (both hot and cold infusion), differences between red and green Rooibos, and much more.

Translation and Origin of the Name

Rooibos is erroneously called red tea: in reality, it is an herbal tea that does not come from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) but rather from a leguminous shrub more closely related to a chickpea plant. The incorrect name Rooibos tea may stem from the atypical red color of the beverage, which may be mistaken for a variant of black or green tea, or from a clumsy translation from the generic herbal tea or cha—referred to in African regions as herbal or spice teas—into tea.

Rooibos and Caffeine

As it is not a tea, Rooibos infusion does not contain caffeine. It has a sweet taste, less bitter than that of tea, and a slightly woody aftertaste that is extremely pleasant and gives the body a warm and enveloping sensation. Red tea has no contraindications and is an alternative to tea that can be enjoyed by everyone. This property makes Rooibos suitable for children and during pregnancy. Read more about low-caffeine teas in our blog article!

How is it obtained? Differences between Red and Green Rooibos

Rooibos is one of the most appreciated African beverages. There are two varieties of Rooibos, the more common Red Rooibos and Green Rooibos. The difference between the two lies in the processing method, which resembles that of green and black tea.

  • Green Rooibos: does not undergo an oxidation process. Its leaves are harvested and subjected to a heat source that stops the oxidation of polyphenols. It has a very herbaceous flavor, and is consumed to enjoy its antioxidant properties. Often used as a natural supplement. Try our Organic Green Rooibos!
  • Red Rooibos: is the most common variety and is obtained by oxidizing the leaves of the plant, which become more complex in terms of organoleptic properties and give a particular taste and the characteristic red color to the infusion. Among the red Rooibos, our Orange and Ginger Rooibos is particularly successful, try it now!

The most common and appreciated Rooibos tea as a hot drink is the Red Rooibos, the South African national beverage that was originally prepared by crushing Rooibos leaves in a mortar and fermenting them, then leaving them to infuse to obtain the drink with its unusual amber color. The word 'Rooibos' in Afrikaans, the language spoken in southern Africa and one of the official languages of South Africa, means precisely 'red bush'.

Rooibos: benefits and properties of red tea

Rooibos has multiple benefits. It is completely free of caffeine, and among its properties, it is also rich in minerals—like all leguminous plants—such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which emerge during infusion, resulting in a particularly hydrating, isotonic beverage, with a marked remineralizing and alkalizing action.

When to drink it?

The properties of Rooibos tea make it a therapeutic beverage. The consumption of red tea is recommended after physical activity, as a replacement for other sports drinks, during menopause, and in old age. In addition, Rooibos can be consumed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it does not alter the taste of milk, and being caffeine-free, it is also suitable for children.

Rooibos is recommended against hair loss, often due to a lack of minerals, especially iron, a deficiency that this infusion can help balance.

Being unoxidized and therefore particularly rich in antioxidants, green Rooibos, just like green tea, acts against the formation of free radicals, as well as having a marked digestive action.

What are the contraindications of Rooibos?

Red tea has no contraindications, unless there is an intolerance to the plant itself and its active ingredient.

However, many mistakenly use Rooibos infusion to sleep and combat insomnia. Although Rooibos is caffeine-free, it is not a relaxing plant, so it does not constitute a remedy for insomnia. On the contrary, studies suggest that increased intake of minerals tends to alter sleep; therefore, it is advisable to avoid consumption just before going to bed, especially for individuals with sleep disorders, as it could have an energizing effect.

Preparation and recipes

How do you prepare Rooibos? The preparation of this beverage is very simple and can be done using various methods, both hot and cold, and is not limited to herbal teas. Let's discover some preparations together.

Rooibos Infusion

Red tea should be prepared exactly like an herbal tea, using 2-3 grams of loose Rooibos per cup of water, left to infuse for 10-15 minutes. It can be enjoyed without sugar, as it already has a naturally sweet taste.

Cold Rooibos

To the classic hot infusion preparation, you can substitute a Rooibos preparation with cold maceration. Our suggestion is to use 10 grams of Rooibos per liter of room temperature water, to be left to macerate in the refrigerator overnight to be consumed the next morning, after filtering it.

Recipes and pairings: Rooibos chai

Red Rooibos can be paired with spices, fruits, nuts, and even essential oils. Among the Rooibos teas for sale on Terzaluna, you can find different varieties, such as the unique Vanilla and Lemongrass Rooibos, expertly paired with various ingredients, flowers, and spices for a fragrant and warming taste. Alternatively, you can choose an organic loose leaf Rooibos and flavor it to your liking.

We suggest preparing a Rooibos chai, following the recipe for a classic chai latte and using the distinct flavor of Rooibos as an alternative base to black tea, a preparation widely enjoyed in South Africa. The ingredients for Rooibos chai are:

  • 1 teaspoon of Organic RED Rooibos loose leaf
  • Chai spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, a pinch of pepper)
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 100 ml of water

The first step is to toast the spices in a saucepan, then add 100 ml of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add a teaspoon of red Rooibos and let it boil again. Then, add the milk and let it boil again, turn off the heat, and cover the saucepan. After 10 minutes, the drink can be strained and sweetened with half a teaspoon of cane sugar, following the recipe for sweet, spicy, and warming Indian chai.

Green Rooibos can be used to prepare detox herbal teas, with the addition of lemon and ginger or purifying herbs.

Ground red Rooibos can also be used in cooking: try it in doughs or infused in the preparation of water-based cakes.

Storage

Like all herbal teas and teas, Rooibos should be stored in airtight containers, preferably away from light.

When brewed hot, it should be consumed on the same day, especially if it is a green Rooibos tea, to avoid the loss of antioxidants. Red tea prepared with cold maceration can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days to be consumed throughout the day.
